India/Nepal BBNJ Cluster COVID-19 Disaster Relief
Ever since we heard about the Covid-19 pandemic raging in India, we have been exploring ways through which we can lend a helping hand to help alleviate the human suffering there. We found such an agency in the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention (IMB) which has personnel and national partners on the ground to channel aid to the people most affected by the pandemic.
Because of the medical nature of the pandemic, everyone was focused on providing medical relief, but we are aware that there are other areas of need that are just as pressing. Upon the recommendation of the IMB, we were directed to the Northeastern part of India and Nepal. This area, which has a population of 234 million people, was hard hit by the lack of medical services, lock downs and unemployment since 2020 which have caused tremendous hardship to the people there. The plan was to distribute ration relief packages to the families there to show Christ’s love and compassion for them and to stand with our brothers and sisters and the people during their hour of need.
For this, we committed to raise $40,000 for the relief efforts.
When word got out about this gesture of Christ’s compassion to India and Nepal on May 6, 2021, pas-tors, churches and individuals responded in a huge way. Despite many churches not completely opened for in-person worship and fundraising activities posed some challenges when churches themselves did not have their regular tithes and offering collection on Sundays, funds began to flow in. It was solely the work of God as He worked in the hearts of His people and stirred their compassion for others in need.
As of June 13, 2021, a little over a month of our start date, churches and individuals have given a total of $70,215 towards the Fund and churches have indicated that more funds are on the way. We praise God for this outpouring of generosity which reflected the generosity of God to all of us, when the apostle Paul reminded the believers in Corinth in their giving, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” (II Corinthians 8:9) All of the funds collected have been sent to the IMB and there were no administration fees charged.
To give, please send your check payable to the CHINESE BAPTIST FELLOWSHIP with memo “India COVID -19” and send to:
P.O. Box 1393
Monterey Park, CA. 91754
(We will send the tax-deductible receipt to the return address as indicated.)

A letter from Rev. Jeremy Sin, North American Mission Board, to Rev. Amos Lee
Dear Pastor Lee:
The storm in Florida has caused many to forget the urgent need for volunteer teams in Houston. Houston’s First Baptist Church is prepared to receive, house, feed and deploy 150 volunteers every week over the next months.
Could you let Chinese churches in your area to consider sending volunteers as early as next week to meet this pressing need and opportunity?
Below are some details and ways to response. I am ready to answer your questions or point you in the right direction for answers.

I am Peggy. My mom and I moved to Houston many years ago and we settled down there by buying the ground floor unit of a condo. We lived peacefully in that unit up until August 27 (Sunday) when, for the first time in my life, I experienced being a “Victim of a Hurricane”. Hurricane Harvey struck Houston on a Friday but churches had started to inform members of their congregations that Worship Services that Sunday would be cancelled.
On that eventful Sunday, I woke up at my regular 7 o’clock hour. When I got off bed, I realized that the carpet was completely wet. So, I went to wake up my mom sleeping in another room. While passing through the living room, I discovered that there was already an inch of water there. I panicked and called out to my mom to gather all the important things and place them on a high place while I pulled all the electrical plugs to prevent electrical shock. However, as I was pulling out one of the plugs from the outlet socket, I could hear a sizzling sound and felt a tingling sensation. Praise God He spared me from being electrocuted!
I then urged my 84 year-old mom to have her breakfast as quickly as she could as she had to take her medication. I was especially anxious for her. Although she was relatively healthy for her age, her reaction to events and her movements were slow. She refused to leave. As I was speaking to her, water had reached my ankle. My cellphone and wi-fi services were disrupted. I realized then that we were in dire circumstances. I quickly gathered all of her medication, packed two shorts, two Tshirts and underwear and together with my company’s laptop, and got ready to rush out of the unit. But the water level kept rising. By now, it had reached the level where the electrical outlets were. I forced my mom to evacuate immediately while the rain outside started to pour again.
What I saw outside shocked me. The parking lot was already full of water – up to the level of the wheels of vehicles. I knew I could not get to my car and drive away. I decided then that the only way out was to walk to safety and seek help. But as I considered my mom, I recognized that that was impossible for her. My only alternative was to walk my mom up to the second floor neighbors and sought help. Moments later, we heard a loud sound and the entire building went dark. The rain kept falling and we waited at the balcony of the second floor hoping that the rain would let up enough for us to take refuge in a hotel.
Thirty minutes passed. The rain slowed. But as the five of us were getting ready to leave, one other elderly neighbor felt she could not leave her old and huge pet dog behind. She surmised that it was unable to swim and make it out. She adamantly decided to stay. Recognizing her predicament, I immediately went back to my unit and got a big tub and put the dog in it. It floated along with us and became a refugee just like us! By then the water level had reached our waist.
The water level kept on rising. We kept walking for about twenty minutes and reached the main road. God sent the Civil Defense Team and took us to safety in a hotel in two vehicles. Praise God! We stayed at the hotel for two days and were later relocated to stay with a family until now.
Today is September 5. My home remained in a sealed area. According to news reports, water level in that area is still high. Many bunds there are breached and the authorities are advising people not to enter that area.
Having experienced the effects of this hurricane, I have come to understand that God is my only refuge and help. Even though I may have lost every thing as I did not have flood insurance for my home, I firmly believe that God has preserved me for a greater mission and assignment. May the Lord give me the faith to face my future, to live a life of humility, and to love God and people. All Glory to God!

Hurricane Harvey has proven to be an unprecedented storm that hit the Gulf Coast making landfall in the southern State of Texas on August 25. It was reported to be the fiercest storm to have hit the Houston area in 800 years that had poured an estimated 9 trillion gallons of rain into the area. That volume of water is equivalent to be the size of two Salt Lakes in the State of Utah. Inevitably, the devastation brought on by it was huge as well. With devastations everywhere especially in the Houston area and other parts of the state, how could we respond to help our brothers and sisters in need after the initial shock of seeing images of roof-high flooding and full and spilling shelters that proved inadequate in the face of such enormous calamity.
“A Cup of Hot Tea in a Cold and Wet Place”
We praise God (and it is heartening to see) that many churches have opened their doors to help shelter victims, and pastors, ministers and church members have taken in people into their homes even when they themselves were subject to the devastations as well. Some had to evacuate when rising water reached their homes. But it was certainly a “cup of hot tea in a cold and wet place” given in the name of Jesus. And God honors that!
What can CBF do in the midst of such overwhelming needs and the seemingly meager resources we have? I am reminded by the biblical record in the Gospels according to Matthew, Luke and John when Jesus fed the 5000 with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes when even one of disciples purportedly asked “… but how far will they go among so many?” (John 6:9b) The lesson to be learned by Philip and by us is this: Our limited resources will be multiplied many times over in the hands of the Master as God’s people are willing to give them to Him without reservation.
1. Pray! We must! Pray for those affected by the flooding and for God’s comfort and help as they return to their houses they once call “home”. Pray for an abiding faith in God to see meaning and purpose in what they are going through and as we reflect upon our own sense of meaning and purpose in life. Pray for our selves to have the heart of God to see people in need through his lenses.
2. Help local churches identify specific needs of individuals and vulnerable people in their congregations and/or their community who fall through the “cracks” and provide meaningful assistance to them as they rebuild their lives and homes. We will work closely with the Chinese Baptist Fellowship of Texas on this.
3. Raise funds from the larger Chinese Baptist family in North America to meet those needs. Please send your contributions to CBF for such a purpose.
4. Organize mission teams on a regular basis to work with local Chinese Baptist churches to help people in their recovery and rebuilding efforts.
I am struck by a story I read somewhere about a man walking on a beach after a severe overnight storm. Scattered on the beach were starfishes that had been thrown onshore from the raging tide. With the rising sun he knew that they would all die in time. The man then began picking up the starfishes and throwing them back to sea. Another man walked by and remarked: “There are so many of them. How can you save them all?” The man replied, “They might be many but I’m saving them one at a time!”
Let’s get busy in the days ahead as we pray, as we give and as we get our hands dirty to do our part in making a difference in the lives of many, one at a time.
Our faith demands it!
